Hillsound FreeSteps6 Crampon
FreeSteps6 is Hillsound's lightest pair, roughly 12 ounces in medium, with six spikes per foot on a heat moulded elastomer harness that stays stretchy below freezing. Six points sounds modest and it is deliberate: enough bite for packed snow and sidewalk ice without the bulk of a twelve point chain system. A velcro strap over the instep locks the harness down, and a carry bag comes in the box.
Good middle ground for commuters and casual winter walkers who want spikes rather than coils but do not need mountaineering hardware. On thick uneven ice or steep frozen trails a denser spike layout inspires more confidence. The elastomer relaxes slightly after a few seasons of hard use, and the spikes cannot be replaced individually, so heavy daily wear shortens the life of the pair.
