Kahtoola NANOspikes Footwear Traction

NANOspikes are the flattest thing Kahtoola makes: ten spikes per foot with tungsten carbide tips, each set in an aluminium anchor wrapped in a TPU cleat, mounted on a thin elastomer harness. The point is pavement. They were designed for road runners who still train when the sidewalk turns to hard pack, and they handle the constant switch between icy patches and dry concrete without feeling like a crampon underfoot.

For city walking this is the least intrusive option here: no chain rattle, barely any stack height, easy to keep on for a whole errand. Carbide tips outlast plain steel on concrete. What they will not do is dig into deep snow, soft drifts or a steep trail, and the low profile means less margin on thick rutted ice. Sizing is snug, so check the chart against the actual shoe rather than guessing.

Pros

  • Very low profile, close to normal walking
  • Tungsten carbide tips resist concrete wear
  • Handles dry and icy stretches equally
  • Light enough for daily running
  • Four year warranty from Kahtoola

Cons

  • Little grip in deep or soft snow
  • Short spikes on thick rutted ice
  • Pricey next to coil style cleats
  • Sizing runs narrow
