The WR120B is the plain desktop box most storm watchers start with. Public Alert certified, it receives all seven NOAA channels and uses SAME programming for up to 25 counties, so it stays quiet when a warning belongs to somebody three counties over. More than 60 alert types are handled, with a 90 dB siren, voice alert and color coded LED, and the display cycles through English, Spanish and French. Midland lists it at $54.99. Footprint is about 6 by 5 inches, so it hides behind a fruit bowl.
Right tool for a bedroom or an office where the mains socket is permanent: three AA cells only cover the outage. There is no AM/FM tuner and no rechargeable pack, so it is a dedicated alarm, not an entertainment radio. County codes are entered by hand once, and that half hour with the manual is the whole learning curve.
