Rösle has made kitchen tools in Bavaria since 1888, and this peeler is the mirror image of its right-handed model: the swivel blade sits on the side a left hand actually needs, so the pull goes straight and the peel comes off in one strip. Body and handle are one piece of 18/10 stainless steel with a satin finish that hides fingerprints, and the sharpened tip opposite the blade digs out potato eyes. There is a hanging ring at the end, it goes in the dishwasher, and Rösle backs it with a lifetime warranty.

It suits a left-hander tired of twisting the wrist around tools built for somebody else, and it holds up to daily work on carrots, apples and potatoes. The narrow metal handle is the trade-off: with wet hands it can slip, and there is no cushioned grip for anyone with sore joints. On thick celeriac skin the swivel blade needs a second pass.
