The Alpha III is the kit most American rocketeers remember from childhood, and the 1427 version is the full launch set: the rocket, the Porta-Pad II launch pad and the Electron Beam controller in one box. It belongs to the E2X family, which means no balsa sanding and no painting: the 12.1 inch body comes precolored and the three fins arrive as a single molded plastic unit that slides onto the tube. An hour of work, mostly waiting for glue, and it is ready.
On a C6-7 engine it reaches about 1,150 feet, which is plenty of altitude to lose sight of it on a windy day, so a big mowed field helps. Engines, starters, recovery wadding and four AA batteries are bought separately, and that surprises people who expect a complete package. Good first kit for a parent and child; builders who like sanding and painting will find little to do here.
Two rockets and a complete launch system for roughly the price of one starter set. The Tandem-X box holds the Amazon, a precolored E2X model with plastic fins that goes to about 600 feet, and the Crossfire ISX with laser cut wood fins and decals, good for around 1,150 feet, plus the Porta-Pad II pad and the Electron Beam controller.
The pairing is the point: the easy rocket flies the same afternoon, the second one gives a real build with glue, filling and paint. Clubs and scout leaders like it because one purchase equips two flyers. Engines and starters are extra, and the Crossfire needs patience, so anyone who wants everything airborne within an hour should start with the Amazon and leave the other for the next weekend.

Altitude is modest, roughly 350 feet on a C6-3, and recovery is on a 15 inch parachute, so it works on smaller fields than a sport rocket. That low ceiling is deliberate: this one is bought for the look and for the display shelf between flights. The white finish shows grass stains and scuffs quickly, and the fins are the part most likely to go missing, so keep the little bag they came in.

The build is honest and old fashioned: paper tube, laser cut wood fins glued on by hand, nose cone, shock cord, and a parachute printed with skull and crossbones. Sixteen inches tall, it climbs to about 600 feet on a C6-5.
Skill level is low but not zero, so it suits someone who has flown a snap together model and now wants to sand, fill and paint properly. Fins glued straight fly straight; sloppy ones weathercock into the wind. Nothing about it is high performance, and there is no payload bay, but as a second or third kit it teaches the craft side of the hobby better than any plastic fin can.
Big Bertha is the fat, slow, friendly one: 24 inches tall on a 1.64 inch tube, with balsa fins and an 18 inch parachute. Estes has kept it in production since the 1960s, and it is still the model people recommend when someone asks what to build after a starter set. Flights top out near 500 feet on a C6-5, and the liftoff is slow enough to watch properly instead of catching a blur.
Because it flies low and lands soft, it survives seasons of use and gets cloned, painted, upscaled and fitted with camera mounts by club members. B engines make it a small field rocket. The wide body needs real painting time, the big canopy drifts in wind, and anyone chasing altitude numbers will be bored by it.
A two stage kit for people who have flown enough single stage models to want more. The booster lights the sustainer in the air, and with a C6-0 to C6-7 combination the Mongoose can pass 1,800 feet, which is far higher than most beginner rockets. It stands over 26 inches assembled and can also be flown as a single stage on smaller fields or windy days.
Staging is the whole lesson here: the joint between booster and sustainer has to be snug but not tight, otherwise the upper stage never lights or separates late. Two engines per flight also doubles the cost, and the booster often lands well away from the rest, unpainted and easy to lose in stubble. Bring a spotter, mark the booster in a bright color, and plan for a large open area.
Nearly 80 inches of rocket, built from four body tube sections, which is why people photograph it standing next to a person. The Mean Machine is skill level 3: the tube joints must be aligned or the whole thing bends in flight. It flies on E engines, or on D engines with the supplied spacer, and reaches around 700 feet, low for its size but plenty impressive with that length rising off the pad.
The appeal is presence rather than altitude, and it draws a crowd at any club launch. Downsides are practical: it will not fit in a normal closet or a small car, the long airframe is easy to dent, and a standard short launch rod is not enough. Anyone with limited storage should look at a shorter kit before falling for the photos.
Part of the Pro Series II line and marked 18+, the Star Orbiter is a 45 inch airframe on a 1.64 inch tube with a preassembled 18 inch parachute and a screw on motor retainer, so no masking tape holding the engine in. On an E16-6 or an F15-8 with the adapter it is projected to about 1,800 feet, and the payload section leaves room for an altimeter or a small tracker.
Build quality expectations are higher than on a beginner kit: through the wall fin tabs, epoxy or thick glue, careful filling before paint. Motors in this class cost several dollars apiece and are not stocked in every hobby shop, and a rocket going a third of a mile up needs a proper field and clear weather. For a builder graduating from C engines it is a sensible next step.
Quest's Astra III is the counterweight to the Estes starter kits: 15 inches tall on a 30 mm tube, with a molded plastic fin can instead of glued balsa. In a group building session it goes together in about 45 minutes, which is why teachers and scout leaders buy it by the dozen. Recovery is a 14 inch parachute, and on Quest Q-Jet composite motors flights reach up to roughly 1,200 feet.
The fin can removes the most common beginner mistake, crooked fins, and gives a straight boost almost every time. In exchange there is less to build, and the finished rocket looks more like a toy than a hand made model. Quest engines are harder to find in general stores than Estes ones, and the plain kit version comes without a pad or controller, so plan the launch system separately.
The Initiator is the standard first step into mid power flying: 39 inches long, 2.6 inches in diameter, about 14 ounces empty, with molded plastic fins and a 29 mm motor mount. It is built for composite E, F and G motors, single use or reloadable, and the difference from a black powder rocket is immediate. The launch is loud, fast and leaves a proper smoke trail.
Assembly is straightforward for anyone who has built a couple of Estes kits, but everything around it changes: a heavier pad, a bigger field, usually a club launch with a range safety officer. Motors cost far more than C engines, and reload kits need cleaning and care after each flight. Not a kit for a child or a school yard, and not the cheapest way to enjoy a Saturday, but it is the usual gateway to bigger rockets.
