ALLEX is the scissors brand of Hayashi Cutlery, founded in 1946 in Seki City, the blade town of Gifu prefecture. The series has been in production since the mid 1970s and the shape barely changed: thin stainless blades, slim body, removable rubber rings on the handles. Left-handed versions are separate products, not adapted ones, and the popular S-165L office pair sells for about $13.75 through JetPens in the States. A larger all-purpose model runs 20 cm overall with 9.5 cm blades.
Made for desks, kitchens, packing tables and everyday paper and tape, and light enough to use for a long stretch without a sore thumb. Big hands may find the round handle holes tight, since the design favours one finger per ring. Fabric cutters need proper shears. In the US these arrive through Japanese stationery importers, and the maker's own site is in Japanese.
