Andrew Pearce Bowls opened in 2011 in Hartland, Vermont, and turns bowls from black walnut, cherry and local hardwood, including burl pieces and live edge presentation boards. Walls are thin, rims are irregular where the log dictates, and the finish is food safe. The workshop and retail store on Route 4 sit together, and turning demonstrations run most days the store is open, which explains why the place ends up on Vermont travel routes.

Best for a gift with weight to it: a large walnut bowl is closer to furniture than to tableware in price. Not the place for a cheap everyday spoon, and stock of single burl pieces is limited by what wood comes in. Hand wash, dry at once, and oil regularly, or thin walls will check.
