Joshua Vogel's Kingston studio in the Hudson Valley makes kitchen tools the way a sculptor would: hand shaped spoons, spatulas, spice bowls and single slab cutting boards in domestic hardwoods, many finished in the studio's blackened surface. Vogel wrote a book on the subject, "The Artful Wooden Spoon", and the output sits closer to gallery work than to farmers market woodenware. Alongside the small tools there are boards, tabletop pieces and furniture, all made in the same workshop.
Buyers get strong shapes and unusual finishes, priced accordingly; this is not the place for a cheap spare spatula. Handmade items typically ship within two to four weeks, so it works badly as a last minute gift. The showroom on Hurley Avenue is open Friday to Sunday and by appointment during the week. Blackened surfaces need gentle care, hand washing and oiling, to keep looking the way they did on arrival.
