Founded in Florida in 2012 and now the best known peer to peer rental service in the United States, Boatsetter lists everything from small centre consoles and pontoons to sport fishing boats and large yachts. Bookings come with third party liability insurance arranged through the platform, and renters without a licence or experience can hire a vetted captain in the same checkout, which is the feature that made the company popular with first timers.
Sensible for a half day in Miami, the Keys, San Diego or Lake Travis, where captained pontoons and deck boats are plentiful. Less convincing outside North America, since coverage in Europe is thin. Prices are set by owners, so the same class of boat can differ sharply in one marina, and fuel is usually settled with the owner or captain after the trip. Tipping the captain is expected.
