This is the largest independent BSL learning site in the UK, run by Lisia Digital Limited, and its paid course, Introducing British Sign Language, is aimed squarely at complete beginners. It is designed for roughly sixteen to twenty hours of study spread over a couple of months, access lasts two years, and it works on a phone or tablet as well as a laptop. The free side of the site is generous: a BSL dictionary, a fingerspelling tool and sign of the day pages that many UK learners use daily.
For a parent, shop worker or colleague who wants to hold a simple conversation with a deaf person, this is a cheap and painless start. It is not a Signature qualification, so it will not open doors to interpreter training or count as a formal BSL level, and there is no live tutor. Learners who need an accredited certificate should treat it as a warm up before enrolling with an approved centre.
