Brooklyn Shoe Space

A shared studio in Williamsburg built around shoemaking and leather goods, not around 3D printers. Membership buys bench time plus use of studio machines and shared tool kits: lasting pliers, French hammers, scissors, pattern making tools and small leather goods tools. Classes run the whole range, from a short introduction to shoemaking for about $75 up to multi day boot making courses that cost over $3,000. Guest teachers hold master classes a few times a year.

Good fit for someone who wants to try hand welted shoes or a bag without buying lasts, a stitcher and forty punches. Less good for a casual once a month hobby: the studio works on booked studio time and New York rates, so cost per hour is high. Beginners are usually asked to take a class first, because most of the machines here are not self explanatory.

Address: 224 Roebling St, Brooklyn, NY
