Earlywood was started in 2010 by Brad Bernhart, a mechanical engineer, and still works out of Red Lodge, Montana. The line is small on purpose: thin spatulas, scrapers for cast iron, flat sauté tools, spreaders, french rolling pins and utensil sets, cut from dense hardwoods such as jatoba, bloodwood and Mexican ebony rather than soft pine. Edges are thin, handles are plain, and the shop backs its utensils with a lifetime guarantee and its own wood oil.

Suits cooks who use one tool every day and want it to keep its edge in a hot pan. The modern shapes are not for everyone: a buyer expecting a traditional round spoon may find these too flat and square. Multi piece sets run into the low hundreds, and the dark woods need oiling to stay dark.
