Opened in 1957 as Western Studios at 6000 West Sunset Boulevard, the building holds four rooms and a long list of records made in them, from Beach Boys sessions to Sinatra dates. Doug Rogers of EastWest bought and relaunched the complex in 2006, keeping the original room acoustics and handing the interiors to designer Philippe Starck, so the lounges look nothing like a normal studio. Booking goes through the studio directly on [email protected].
Suits producers who want period rooms with modern maintenance, plus enough floor space for strings and choirs. The Starck interiors also make it a regular pick for filmed live sessions and photo shoots. Weak points: the rooms are expensive, the design can feel showy if you just want to work, and Sunset Boulevard traffic makes load in times unpredictable. Client parking is limited for larger crews.
