Jimi Hendrix built this place at 52 West 8th Street and it opened in August 1970, weeks before he died. John Storyk designed the curved walls of Studio A, and the basement layout has barely changed: three tracking rooms plus mix suites, vintage Neve desks, a mic cupboard that engineers talk about for years. Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar, SZA, David Bowie and Patti Smith all cut material here, and the studio still runs as a full commercial facility under managing partner Lee Foster.
Good fit for artists who want a Greenwich Village address, a live room with history and staff who work fast. Less good for anyone on a tight budget or a tight schedule: the calendar fills months ahead, rates are top tier, and the studio does not give tours, so you see the rooms only as a paying client. Loading heavy gear into a basement on West 8th Street is its own small project.
