ExpressVPN has been around since 2009 and was bought by Kape Technologies in 2021 in a deal valued at about $936 million. Its own protocol, Lightway, was rewritten in Rust in 2025 and is built for fast connections and quick reconnects when a device hops between Wi-Fi and mobile data, which matters to anyone gaming on a phone. The service now sells Basic, Advanced and Pro tiers. Long plans start at around $2.79 to $2.99 a month, while month-to-month costs about $12.99.
The practical argument for gamers is the hardware side. ExpressVPN makes its own Aircove Wi-Fi 6 router with the VPN built in, and its router firmware is one of the easier ways to put a PlayStation or Xbox behind a tunnel. It is less attractive for anyone hosting lobbies, since there is no port forwarding, and the monthly plan is expensive next to rivals.
