Rick Hall started FAME in 1959 and moved it to 603 East Avalon Avenue in Muscle Shoals, where Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett and Etta James cut sides with the local rhythm section. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places and, unlike most landmarks, it is still a working studio with a publishing arm attached. Rates are far below Los Angeles or Nashville levels, which is why bands drive in for week long blocks.
Right for soul, blues, country and rock acts who want the old room and analog chain rather than a glossy new build. The staff engineers know the gear and the history. The trade offs are geography and scale: Muscle Shoals is a small Alabama town, the nearest big airport is a drive away, hotel and food options are limited, and the studio cannot host a symphony sized session. Book early, tourist traffic and sessions share the calendar.
