First Alert is the retail face of BRK Brands, the Aurora, Illinois maker that put the first battery powered residential smoke alarm on store shelves in 1976. BRK itself goes back to 1958, and production still runs from a plant in Juarez, Mexico. Newell Brands sold the business to Resideo in April 2022, and the portfolio kept its three names: First Alert for retail, BRK for builders and contractors, Onelink for connected devices.
The line covers smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, combination units, extinguishers, escape ladders, gas test kits and fire resistant document safes. Ten year sealed lithium models remove the yearly battery ritual, and the newer alarms are built to the 8th edition of UL 217. For a homeowner replacing detectors on schedule, availability alone makes the brand practical. Cooks who mount photoelectric units near a stove still meet the occasional false alarm.
