ASL Connect is the American Sign Language arm of Gallaudet University, the Washington university for deaf and hard of hearing students chartered back in 1864. It runs free introductory online resources plus paid courses on three tracks: non credit classes for the public, professional studies for people who need documented training hours, and university credit courses. Teaching is done by deaf faculty, and enrolment is open to adults with a high school diploma or an equivalent.

The strongest reason to choose it is the name on the certificate and the depth of the curriculum, which goes far past greetings and fingerspelling into grammar and Deaf culture. The trade off is university machinery: applications, set semester dates, class times in US Eastern hours and tuition that looks steep next to an app subscription. Someone who only wants a few signs for a neighbour will find it heavy.
