The Mel-8704R came out of a personal story. Engineer Gary Galka built the first units after the death of his daughter Mel, and the line is sold as instruments made for paranormal work rather than for electricians. One screen shows the magnetic field reading and the ambient temperature at the same time, so a cold spot and a spike land in front of you together. The red backlight keeps night vision, and a small flashlight sits in the housing. Later versions add extras: a REM antenna, ambient temperature deviation alerts, vibration and shadow sensors.
Investigators who film their work like it because everything is in one hand and one frame. The price sits well above a simple LED detector, and the probe reads a single axis, so orientation changes the number. For a first cheap meter it is too much money. For a team that wants temperature and field on the same log, it earns its keep.
