Polarsteps
Polarsteps started in Amsterdam in 2015 and treats a journey as a story: the app records the route by GPS with very low battery use, works without mobile signal and stitches photos and notes into a travel diary that friends can follow live. A planning tab lets stages, dates and rough stops be drafted before departure, and finished trips can be ordered as a printed photo book.
Long overland travel is its natural habitat: backpackers, sailors, motorcyclists and van dwellers who care about the trace on the map. Detailed logistics are not the point; there is no confirmation email parsing, no expense splitting and only basic day scheduling. Anyone planning a tightly scheduled city break with timed tickets will find it too loose, while the printed book costs extra.
