A converted garage at 6650 Sunset Boulevard that Disney music director Tutti Camarata opened in 1958. Three studios, all still tracking: Studio 1 hosted the Rolling Stones for Exile on Main St., Studio 2 saw Led Zeppelin IV sessions, and Studio 3 was Prince's main room through most of the 1980s. The live chambers, the old Neve and API desks and the maintained tape machines are the reason producers keep coming back instead of working in a new build.
Best for rock, soul and anything that needs a room sound rather than a dry booth. The studio runs around the clock, which suits night sessions. Downsides are practical: the complex is small, so if your dates clash with a long album block you wait; parking off Sunset is limited; and the vintage layout means low ceilings in places and less space for a large orchestra than newer Hollywood facilities.
