Founded in 2008 at Ekone Ranch above Rock Creek Canyon, White Eagle is a 20 acre burial ground inside more than 1,200 protected acres of oak and ponderosa pine, held by the nonprofit Sacred Earth Foundation. It was among the first conservation burial grounds certified by the Green Burial Council and a founding member of the Conservation Burial Alliance. Burial is low density: sites measure 20 by 20 feet on a grid that keeps graves clear of tree roots, with roughly 1,200 of them platted. Graves are opened with pickaxes and shovels, closed by hand, and dressed with forest duff and garden plants.
Families who want to carry, lower and cover the body themselves get real support here, including a community fund that helps with cost. The trade off is distance and logistics: two and a half hours from Portland, about four from Seattle, thirty minutes of gravel from Goldendale, no drop in visits and patchy mobile signal.
Address: Goldendale, WA, 401 Ekone Road
