50 Clues: The Fate of Leopold

Brand: 50 Clues

0

The third and final part of the first 50 Clues trilogy, following Leopold's Death and The White Chapel. One to five players, age 16 and up, about 60 to 90 minutes for a deck of numbered cards. Players choose which card to explore next, and wrong turns cost time and can end the story badly. Nordic horror sets the tone, with a grim plot rather than jokes. Price is usually near 20 dollars.

The series is meant to be played in order, so buying this box alone spoils half the plot. Puzzles are lighter than in EXIT, the pull is the branching story and the fear of picking the wrong card. Because part of the fun is not knowing the layout, one play is all you get, although the deck itself is not destroyed and can go to a friend. Good for two or three people who like horror films and hate maths puzzles.

Pros

  • Branching card choices, real decisions
  • Strong horror mood and pacing
  • Around 20 dollars for 90 minutes
  • Cards are not cut or destroyed
  • Easy rules, start within five minutes

Cons

  • Third part, needs the earlier boxes
  • Puzzles are simple, story does the work
  • One playthrough, then it is spoiled
  • Dark themes unsuitable for children
