50 Clues
Danish designer Jeppe Norsker writes these as trilogies: three small boxes, fifty cards in each, one continuous horror story running through all of them. Leopold's tale came first, followed by Maria's, with Ashes, White Sleep and The Pendulum. A single part takes about 90 minutes for one to five players, and the boxes really do need to be played in order.
Content is for adults. Violence, body horror and thoroughly unpleasant scenes are the point, not decoration, so this is not a box to open with the family after Sunday lunch. Puzzles are clean and fair, with fewer leaps of logic than some rivals, and the pacing keeps the story moving. Cards are consumed as the story burns through them, and buying a whole trilogy costs noticeably more than a single standalone box.
