The 1034DX is Brother's answer for a first serger. It runs 3 or 4 thread overlock at up to 1,300 stitches a minute, keeps a metal frame under the plastic shell and covers 22 built-in stitch functions, from narrow rolled hems to flatlocking. Threading is color coded with a lay-in path, and the chart under the front cover walks through it step by step. The box holds three accessory feet, a trim trap for cut fabric, a needle set and a soft cover.
It suits home sewing of knits, jersey and light woven seams, and anyone tired of zigzag edges that fray anyway. Differential feed keeps stretchy fabric from waving. Thick denim layers and heavy canvas are not its work, and there is no coverstitch. The knife is loud, so a sturdy table helps. Warranty runs 25 years limited, with phone support in English and Spanish.
