For years the 1034D has been the default first serger in North America, and the price tag explains most of it: commonly 200 to 250 dollars new. It runs 3 and 4 thread overlock, narrow and rolled hems, sews up to 1,300 stitches per minute and has a free arm for cuffs and sleeves. Threading diagrams are printed in color inside the front cover, and the differential feed keeps light jersey from waving along the edge.

The plastic housing is the trade-off. The machine hops on a light table, it is loud at speed, and coat wool or thick denim pushes it to the edge of its comfort. For cotton, knits and quilting fabric it is honest value, and replacement knives and feet cost little, which keeps small repairs cheap. Anyone serging all day for sale would be better served by a metal-framed machine.
