Living DNA Ancestry Kit

Living DNA comes out of Frome in England and appeared in 2016. One swab kit returns three views at once: autosomal ethnicity, mitochondrial line and, for men, the Y line haplogroup. Its calling card is the British and Irish breakdown into 21 sub regions, handy when every other test just says Britain and Ireland. Updates to the results arrive without any subscription.

Worth the money for UK and Irish roots, or for a cheap look at deep maternal and paternal lines. Matching is the weak spot: the database is small, so cousin lists stay short and quiet. Turnaround also tends to be slower than the big American labs, and detail outside Europe is broad. Uploading raw data from another test is free, which is usually the smarter way to try their maps first.

Pros

  • 21 sub regions inside Britain and Ireland
  • mtDNA and Y line haplogroups included
  • No subscription needed for updates
  • Free upload of other companies data
  • Plain cheek swab collection

Cons

  • Small pool of DNA matches
  • Slower turnaround than big labs
  • Detail outside Europe is coarse
  • US buyers rely mostly on Amazon
