NC Tool's Knifemaker forge takes the same burner technology as the farrier models and stretches it into a blade shaped chamber: 4 inches high, 4.5 wide and 13.5 long, with insulated doors on both ends and a 2 x 3 inch exhaust port on one of them. Rated 2350F, it runs off a standard 20 lb propane tank and can be configured for natural gas. Ship weight is about 48 lb, regulator and hose included, and dealers list it around the $900 mark.
The pass through layout is the point: Damascus billets and long blades go in from either end, heat stays even along the length, and heat treating soak times are easier to hold. Not the cheapest way into forging and not compact, so a small balcony or a shared garage corner is the wrong home for it. For someone forging blades weekly, the per year cost looks very different.
