SPOT X (SPOT-HD-X-B) is the only messenger here with a physical backlit QWERTY keyboard and a 2.7-inch display, so you can write and read full conversations with no phone involved. Bluetooth pairing with the SPOT X app is optional and makes it easier to pull in your contacts. The unit gets its own US mobile number. You can track at 2.5, 5, 10, 30 or 60 minute intervals. Battery life is 240 hours in 10-minute tracking mode, and it has a compass and programmable waypoints. It measures 6.54 x 2.9 x 0.94 inches, weighs 7 oz, is rated IP67, and has an MSRP of $249.99.
The weak spot is the network. Globalstar covers the continental US well, but there are gaps over parts of the oceans and at high latitudes, so it is a poor choice for polar trips or ocean passages. You need a SPOT plan, either on an annual contract or a pricier monthly Flex option, plus an activation fee. It charges over micro-USB and is bulky next to an inReach Mini.
