SPOT has sold satellite messengers since 2007 and is owned by Globalstar, a satellite operator based in Covington, Louisiana. The lineup is short. The SPOT Gen4 is a one-way tracker, the SPOT X is a two-way messenger with a QWERTY keyboard and Bluetooth, and the SPOT Trace tracks vehicles and gear. SOS alerts go to the FocusPoint coordination center. In 2024 the brand reported 10,000 rescues on six continents in more than 100 countries.
Service starts at $11.95 a month on a 12-month term, plus a $29.95 activation fee. The Gen4 runs on AAA lithium batteries, which helps on long trips. SPOT suits budget-minded drivers, hunters and overlanders in North America, Europe or Australia. The weak spot is the Globalstar network, which leaves gaps at far northern and southern latitudes and in parts of the Pacific. Gen4 custom messages are also set up in advance online and can't be edited in the field.
