A private Green River Formation quarry eleven miles north of Kemmerer, started by three schoolteachers who wanted families on the rock rather than in a shop. Sessions run up to four hours and cost roughly seventy to ninety dollars a head. The unusual condition here: guests keep everything they find, including species other quarries hold back, from Knightia and Diplomystus up to stingrays, gar and the occasional oddity.
Tools are free to use, staff are on the wall to guide splitting, fossil cutting is unlimited and free, and finds too heavy for the car are shipped at the postal rate the quarry pays. Fifty-two million year old fish come out in flat slabs, which makes this the most reliable dig in the country for a first-time visitor. The quarry sits in open sun on a dirt road, so heat and dust are part of the day.
