No tower in the yard? A rig in the shack that sits idle all week? Remote ham radio station platforms let a licensed operator work the bands from a laptop, a phone or a hotel desk. This rating gathers the systems that actually do the job today: cloud services, free control software, network boxes from Icom and Yaesu, and paid networks where you rent time on somebody's big antennas.
Selection was practical. What does it cost, once and every year. Which radios it speaks to. What has to sit at the station: a Windows PC, a Raspberry Pi, a pair of boxes, or nothing at all. Whether it survives a carrier grade NAT line without port forwarding. How the audio behaves on cellular data, and whether CW and FT8 work properly. Support counts too, because a phone number and a live email beat a dead forum.

Remote Ham Radio sells access to stations no ordinary ham could build at home: towers with stacked Yagis, low band four squares, kilowatt amplifiers, most of them in the United States. The console runs in a browser, so nothing gets installed, and there is an iOS app as well. FT8 and FT4 run in the cloud, CW can be sent with a real paddle, and the logbook lives inside the console. Billing has two parts: a subscription for access to a set of stations, then airtime charged by the minute of connection.
Good answer for apartment hams, restricted lots and anyone who wants a loud signal without a permit. Youth members operate a separate donated network at no cost. It suits nobody who likes tinkering, because the rig, the switches and the rules belong to the owner. Check which bands each station covers first, since the sites differ a lot.
RemoteTx puts a Raspberry Pi next to the radio and does the rest in the cloud. The Pi image is a free download; the 3B, 3B+ and 4B are supported, the Pi 5 is not. Control and two way audio arrive in a plain browser at your own address, callsign.remotetx.net, with no plugins, no Mumble and no port forwarding, so a carrier grade NAT line is not a problem. Traffic runs about 80 kbps, which holds up on a phone. Supported rigs include Icom IC-705, 7100, 7200, 7300 and 7610 with scope, Yaesu FT-991/A and Elecraft KX2, KX3 and K3s, plus Yaesu rotators.
There is a 30 day trial, and a cancelled subscription refunds $5 for every unused month. Fine for one operator with one modern rig who wants a setup that just works. Owners of Kenwood gear or older radios are out of luck, and audio sometimes needs a manual restart after the network drops.
SmartLink is FlexRadio's own remote path, folded into SmartSDR from version 2 onward. Own a FLEX-6000, FLEX-8000 or Aurora, register the radio to a SmartLink account, and the same panadapter screen you use at home shows up on a laptop, an iPhone or a Maestro console anywhere with internet. Nothing extra to buy: no interface boxes, no second front panel. MultiFlex lets two operators share one radio, and the software keeps moving, with SmartSDR v4 releases through 2026. The company sits in Austin, Texas and answers the phone during business hours.
Best value for hams who already own the radio, because the service only works with Flex hardware. The Mac and iOS clients are third party products, paid for separately. Networks are the weak spot: some providers, especially IPv6 only and CGNAT lines, will not pass a SmartLink session, and then it is back to a VPN.

RemoteHams is the old community answer and it is still free. Brandon Hansen, KG6YPI, wrote the RCForb pair: a server that turns a Windows PC with a connected transceiver into a remote station, and a client that lists public stations all over the world. An Android client exists as well. Owners hand out roles, listen only, control or transmit, and can schedule slots; transmit permission means sending a copy of your license for the owner to check.
Nothing to pay, which is the draw for a ham who wants to hear how his own signal lands or borrow a quiet receiver for an evening. The rough edges show. The server is Windows only, the client still ships as an alpha build, screen reader users struggle with it, and router work falls on you. Station uptime depends on volunteers, so what is online today may be gone next week.
RS-BA1 Version 2 is Icom's own IP remote package for Windows: a remote utility on the shack PC and a remote panel at the operating end, talking to the rig over CI-V. It covers IC-7300, IC-7610, IC-9700, IC-705, IC-7100 and the IC-7851 class, with dualwatch and two spectrum scopes on the top models. Interference rejection, IF filter settings, RIT and delta TX all sit on the screen, and the RC-28 encoder works if you want something to turn. Street price is close to $149 on a USB stick.
Buy it if you want software your dealer supports and a panel that looks like the front of the radio. Skip it if free tools do not scare you, because wfview covers much of the same ground for nothing. There is no mobile client, the scope window stays small, and the setup guide costs an evening.

The SCU-LAN10 is a small Yaesu interface box that gives the FTDX101D, FTDX101MP, FTDX10 and FT-710 a proper network path. It hooks to the radio with the supplied 13 pin DIN and USB cables and to the router with Ethernet, then the free Windows program shows the scope, the controls and both audio paths from anywhere. Only the box lives at the radio end, and the ferrite cores come in the package. Street price runs near $300, the unit takes 13.8 V and draws up to 800 mA.
Sensible for a Yaesu owner who wants the maker's own solution, and for a club station shared by members. Two catches to plan for: the radio site needs a fixed global IP address or a domain name, and the LAN port is wired only, no Wi-Fi. Windows is the only client, so phones and Macs stay out.
Cypress, CA, 6125 Phyllis Drive
Remoterig, built by Microbit 2.0 AB in Kalix, Sweden, takes a different road: two small boxes and no computer at either end. One box sits at the radio, the other at the operating position, and the radio's own detachable control head becomes the remote panel. Classic combinations include the IC-706 and IC-7100, the Kenwood TS-480 and Yaesu twin setups with two identical rigs. Firmware goes in through the built in web server, and the RRC-Nano apps add Android control. A pre built pair costs about $490 at US dealers.
The pick for an operator who trusts knobs more than screens and wants CW timing that feels real. Two warnings come from the maker's own pages: the radio end needs a public IP address, which CGNAT lines do not give, and the manual runs well over a hundred pages. Sales go through distributors, not the factory.
Kalix, Sweden, Nystaden 1
wfview is the free one, started in 2018 and licensed under GPL v3, with builds for Windows, macOS and Linux. It draws spectrum and waterfall straight from the radio and puts the controls on screen for Icom IC-7300, IC-705, IC-7610, IC-9700, IC-R8600 and the Kenwood TS-890S. Radios with their own Ethernet port stream receive and transmit audio; a USB only rig like the IC-7300 gets bridged by one copy of wfview running as a server for another. Logging and digital programs tie in through hamlib rigctld or a virtual serial port.
For a ham who reads network settings without flinching, it covers most of what the paid software does and costs nothing. Icom and Kenwood only, though. There is no cloud service in the middle, so ports, tunnels and security are your job, and help comes from the mailing list rather than a support desk.
Ham Radio Deluxe has been the Windows station suite for years: rig control, logbook, DM-780 for digital modes, satellite tracking and rotator control in one package, with command support across Alinco, Elecraft, FlexRadio, Icom, Kenwood, Ten-Tec and Yaesu. Remote work goes through two built in servers, one for the radio and one for serial devices such as keyers and rotators, so a laptop at the office can drive the rig at home. The license is perpetual and includes a year of updates and support, after that the renewal is optional.
Handy for operators who want logging and remote control from one vendor, with a real phone number when things break. Windows only. Audio is not included, so voice needs a separate VoIP link, and the company's own manual admits the remote server is no job for a beginner.
RigPi Station Server turns a Raspberry Pi into a station computer you reach with a browser: rig control through hamlib, which knows over 200 radios and 30 rotors, VoIP audio, Morse keying on the K1EL WinKeyer chip, logging, callbook lookup and a scheduler showing which club member booked which radio. Several people can be logged in at once on different rigs. RigPi 4 arrived on 4 August 2025 and the image is a free open source download under the MIT license.
MFJ once sold the boxed MFJ-1234 version, and that ended with MFJ production, so today it is a build it yourself job: a Pi 4, the image, and the CW board or enclosure from K1EL Systems, or a printed case of your own. Good for a club or a patient tinkerer. Audio leans on a Mumble client, and support means the users group.
