Kosmos started the line in 2016, and the first box, The Abandoned Cabin, took the Kennerspiel des Jahres a year later. Since then the series has grown past fifty titles, sold in English by Thames & Kosmos for roughly 15 dollars apiece. Every box carries the same kit: a strange decoder disk, a deck of riddle cards, a few odd paper props and a hint booklet that gives help in three steps. Difficulty is printed on the front, from one lock to five.

The material is consumable. Cards get folded, cut and drawn on, so a box is played once and then handed on as a story rather than as a game. A session runs 45 to 120 minutes with one to four players; more than four and someone is just watching. Beginners should pick a two lock box first, because the five lock titles assume the group already knows how this series bends logic.
