One of the long-standing fee quarries in the Fossil Lake basin near Kemmerer, now run as Fossil Lake Safari with FossilEra Adventures. The split-rock quarry sells short sessions from about twenty-nine dollars for an hour, which suits travellers with a schedule rather than a whole free day. Fish of the Green River Formation, around fifty-two million years old, come out of thin plates that split cleanly.

For serious collectors there are night digs in the famous 18-inch layer at five hundred dollars a place, worked after dark to control lighting and dodge the heat. Guests keep what they find, with an exception for extremely rare specimens above a very high valuation, a condition set by the quarry lease. Getting there means half an hour of gravel road, so a low sports car is a poor choice.
