A dinosaur dig operation in the badlands of North Dakota near Marmarth, working the Hell Creek Formation where Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops and hadrosaurs come out of the same rock. Digs are all-inclusive and multi-day, taking participants through the whole chain: prospecting, excavation, jacketing and preparation. A two-day kids dig is scheduled in early August and fills quickly.
Best suited to people who want the process rather than a souvenir, and who can commit several consecutive days. Everyone under eighteen must be accompanied by a participating adult, so this is a genuine family trip rather than a drop-off activity. Cancellations before 1 June are refunded minus two hundred and fifty dollars per person, which is worth reading twice before booking flights. Marmarth is tiny, so plan accommodation and fuel stops early.
