Omlet started in England in 2004 with the Eglu, a coop moulded from twin wall plastic rather than nailed from boards. The range now runs from the Eglu Go for a few bantams to the Eglu Cube, which houses roughly six to ten hens, with clip on runs, wheel kits and the Autodoor, a light triggered opener sold as an accessory. Panels snap together with a handful of clips, the droppings tray pulls out like a drawer, and the whole shell can be hosed down or scrubbed with disinfectant.

The plastic is the argument for and against. Nothing rots, nothing soaks up the smell, and red mite finds no timber crack to breed in, which is why Omlet suits keepers who are squeamish about lice powder and dark corners. Cost per bird is high, the moulded look sits oddly next to an old barn, and once the run is pegged down the unit is awkward to shift alone.
