A dig outfitter from Belle Fourche, running since 2005 on private ranches in the Hell Creek badlands of South Dakota and neighbouring states. Owner Walter Stein has been excavating since 1996 and has more than thirty significant skeletons behind him, including the largest known Triceratops. Groups are deliberately small, the season runs June to September by appointment, and the minimum age is eight.
The selling point: guests may keep the common fossils they find, commercial-grade material can be bought, while scientific-grade specimens are reserved for museums. Over twenty dinosaur genera have come out of these quarries. Suitable for adults and older teenagers in decent physical shape, less so for anyone who dislikes heat, dust and a full day bent over rock. Lodging is separate, a ranch house near the site rents for around five hundred dollars a night.
