Fifty-four acres of a former cement quarry south of Buffalo, run by the non-profit Hamburg Natural History Society. The rock is Devonian, roughly 380 million years old, and the haul is trilobites, brachiopods, crinoids and horn corals. Tools are provided, staff show newcomers where to split, and everything a guest collects goes home with them, which is rare this far east.

Summer opening is Wednesday to Sunday through Labor Day, then weekends until the season closes in late September, with final entry at 2:45 pm. Paved trails make much of the site reachable with a wheelchair, walker or stroller. Members may collect from dawn to dusk all year, a sensible option for repeat visitors. Anyone hoping for dinosaur bone should look elsewhere, this is marine invertebrate country, and the pit offers little shade.
