TouchChat comes from PRC-Saltillo in Wooster, Ohio, a firm that has built speech devices since long before tablets existed. The plain iPad version sells for about 150 dollars, the edition with the WordPower vocabulary for roughly double that, both as a single purchase. English and Spanish are included, buttons can be resized and hidden, and finished messages can be sent by text or email straight from the app. Word prediction and stored phrases cut down the tapping.
The app suits school teams and speech therapists who want one setup copied across several iPads, and parents who prefer a phone number to a contact form: PRC-Saltillo answers on a toll free line. Downsides are real. The interface looks dated next to newer apps, the number of separate versions in the App Store confuses buyers, and there is no Android build.
