Wave still keeps a genuinely free tier: unlimited invoices, estimates, recurring billing, late fees and double entry books on the Starter plan. Money comes from payments, cards at 2.9% plus 60 cents, ACH at 1% with a $1 minimum, instant payout at 1% of the amount withdrawn with a $25 minimum. The Pro plan, roughly $16 to $19 a month, adds automatic bank feeds, receipt scanning, extra collaborators and removal of Wave branding from invoices.
For a side business or a one man operation that wants real bookkeeping without a subscription, little else competes. The limits are plain: reporting is shallow beside QuickBooks, there is no job costing or scheduling, and free users get help articles instead of a person. Payout holds during payment reviews come up often in reviews, which stings when one invoice equals a week of wages.
