23andMe Ancestry Service DNA Test Kit

Brand: 23andMe

0

23andMe started in 2006 and the kit still ships with that familiar spit tube. Besides the ethnicity breakdown it returns maternal and paternal haplogroups, a Neanderthal ancestry share, trait reports and an opt in DNA Relatives list. Marketing counts thousands of regions, but the useful detail sits mainly in Europe and East Asia. Results usually land in three to five weeks.

Good for people who want lineage markers and traits in one box instead of buying a separate Y-DNA test. Two things to weigh. Health reports belong to the pricier Health and Ancestry tier, and the 2025 bankruptcy plus change of owner made plenty of users think harder about who holds their sample. Tree building tools are thin compared with Ancestry, and the relative list stays empty until sharing is switched on.

Pros

  • Maternal and paternal haplogroups included
  • Neanderthal and trait reports
  • Spit tube with clear instructions
  • Sold on Amazon, Walmart and eBay
  • Free raw data download

Cons

  • Health reports cost noticeably more
  • Ownership changed after 2025 bankruptcy
  • Family tree tools are basic
  • No historical records archive behind it
