HomeDNA Ancestry Test Kit

Brand: HomeDNA

0

HomeDNA comes from DNA Diagnostics Center in Ohio and it is the kit sitting on a shelf at Walmart or Walgreens. One detail catches people out: the box is a collection kit only, the lab fee is paid at activation. Two levels exist, a starter test with a broad continental picture and the advanced GPS Origins version that maps migration routes and tries to name towns your lines passed through.

Useful as a same day gift, or when a physical box beats waiting for delivery. Do not expect a cousin list: HomeDNA runs no matching network, so it answers where, not who. Collection is a cheek swab, results take a few weeks after the lab receives it, and the two step payment annoys anyone who only read the shelf price.

Pros

  • Sold on store shelves and online
  • GPS Origins migration route maps
  • Cheek swab, no saliva tube
  • Run by an accredited relationship lab
  • Choice of starter or advanced level

Cons

  • Lab fee charged apart from the kit
  • No DNA matching with relatives
  • Ethnicity results hard to verify
  • Little in the way of free updates
