Amazon opened Kindle Direct Publishing in 2007 and it still holds the largest slice of English language ebook sales. Uploading is free, the file goes live within roughly 72 hours, and the royalty is 70 percent for titles priced between 2.99 and 9.99 US dollars, with a delivery fee subtracted per megabyte. Outside that band the rate drops to 35 percent. KDP Select adds Kindle Unlimited borrows, paid per page read, in exchange for 90 days of exclusivity. Paperback and hardcover printing sit in the same dashboard.

Suited to authors who want the widest possible readership and are comfortable being tied to one retailer's rules. Less comfortable for anyone building a wide catalogue, since Select forbids selling the same ebook elsewhere. Payments land about 60 days after the month closes, and accounts can be suspended with little explanation, so keeping backups and a mailing list is prudent.
