AncestryDNA holds the largest consumer matching pool in the field, with more than 25 million people tested since 2012. The test is autosomal only: it reads hundreds of thousands of markers across all chromosomes and returns an ethnicity estimate, a cousin list and Genetic Communities tied to migration groups. ThruLines connects matches to the shared ancestors already sitting in public family trees, which is the real reason most researchers start here. The kit usually sits near 99 dollars and drops closer to 59 during holiday sales.

Best suited to someone hunting for unknown relatives or confirming a paper trail in the United States, Britain or Ireland. Less useful for deep paternal or maternal lineage work, since neither Y-DNA nor mtDNA is tested. Results grow far more useful with a records subscription, billed separately, and raw data from other companies cannot be uploaded.
