Started in 2011 for creators of every kind, Gumroad has become a common home for ebooks sold outside the retail chain. The fee structure is flat: 10 percent of each sale, no monthly subscription, with payouts through PayPal or a linked bank account. Pay what you want pricing, license keys, version updates pushed to past buyers and a ratings system are all built in, and the Discover feed gives a title some browsing exposure for a higher cut.

Attractive to authors selling bundles, workbooks, serialised fiction or anything awkward for a bookstore's catalogue rules. Checkout is quick and the buyer's email belongs to the seller. Discovery remains weak compared with a real bookshop, the interface leans towards courses and software rather than novels, and Gumroad's occasional shifts in fees and policy have taught regular sellers to keep their files and lists somewhere else too.
