Sega Toys
Sega Toys is the toy arm of Japan's Sega Sammy group, with roots in Yonezawa Toys, a large post-war Tokyo manufacturer absorbed by Sega in 1991. In 2024 the company was renamed Sega Fave, though the Sega Toys name still travels on packaging abroad. In Japan it lives on character lines such as Anpanman, Jewelpet, Mushiking and Dinosaur King; outside Japan it is known mostly for the Homestar home planetarium, launched in 2005 and developed with planetarium engineer Takayuki Ohira, plus oddities like the iDog robot speaker.
Worth knowing for anyone shopping for a Homestar: these projectors use an optical lens and printed discs rather than pinholes, which is why the star field looks sharp on a ceiling. Buyers abroad should check the plug and voltage, since many units are made for the Japanese market, and extra discs are usually sold separately.
