Amazon's first colour reader pairs a 7 inch Kaleido 3 panel with custom display coatings and a light guide with micro deflectors: text stays at 300 ppi, colour images render at 150 ppi with about 4,096 shades. The Signature Edition shipped on 30 October 2024 at $279.99 with 32 GB, wireless charging, an auto brightness sensor and IPX8 protection. A cheaper 16 GB Colorsoft followed later at a lower price.
Colour helps with covers, highlights, cookbooks and comics, and highlighting in four colours is genuinely useful for study notes. Anyone reading only prose gains little for the money, since the colour layer slightly dulls the white background compared with a Paperwhite. Early units suffered a yellow band along the bottom edge, addressed by firmware and replacements, so buyers of used stock should inspect the screen carefully.
