For watching recorded lectures, running a browser based question bank and reading textbooks it does the job, and losing it on a bus hurts far less than losing an iPad. microSD expansion is standard, and battery life sits around thirteen hours of light use.
Fire OS is the compromise. Apps come from the Amazon Appstore, so several study services are missing unless Google Play services are sideloaded, which takes patience. Lock screen advertisements appear unless the ad free version is chosen at checkout. Stylus support is basic, so serious handwritten notes belong elsewhere. Sensible as a cheap second screen for video while the main notes live on a laptop.
