The inReach Messenger launched in 2022 at $299.99 and is Garmin's phone-first device. Its small 160 x 68 memory-in-pixel screen confirms that a message went out and shows replies, but real typing happens in the Garmin Messenger app. The app handles group chats and contact sync, and switches between cellular, Wi-Fi and Iridium on its own. The body weighs about 4 oz and is rated IPX7. Battery life is its strongest point: up to 28 days with 10-minute tracking under open sky, about 14 days under moderate tree cover, and up to 46 days at 30-minute intervals.
It fits long trips with rare charging stops: thru-hikes, sailing passages, multi-week hunts. In an emergency it can also give a dead phone enough charge to send a message, though testers call that reverse charging slow. It has no maps, only TracBack. Anyone who wants to write messages without a phone in hand should look at the Mini 3 instead.
